Research

My research involves investigating use of new bioinformatics technologies for personally controlled health records (PCHR) and social networking systems to support cohort research, public health surveillance and personalized prevention. My work has a principal focus on improving the health of adolescents and young adults, including those who are affected by chronic illness and those who are experiencing risks related to behavioral or psychosocial problems. Much of my work has focused on advancing understanding about individual and social determinants of health risk behaviors among adolescents and young adults and application of behavioral and social surveillance data for real time community-based prevention. Currently, my work is focused on advancing understanding of the patterning, management and self-care behaviors of diabetes including among adolescents and young adults, and addressing risks related to social, developmental and health care transitions using PCHR and social networking tools to support more effective clinical and public health monitoring, intervention and care.
